چکیده

SUMMARY The applications of GPS can be found across almost all of a nation's economic, scientific and social activities. The major shortcoming of GNSS is that it is usable everywhere where there is clear sky, and hence fails to operate where it's impossible or difficult to receive the satellite signals. In some difficult signal environments – principally where the satellite signals are weak (<-142 dBm) and multipath is severe – " high sensitivity " GPS/GNSS and/or assisted-GPS/GNSS can be used to improve positioning, navigation and timing availability. Other sensors can also be integrated with GPS/GNSS to improve positioning. In environments where GPS/GNSS completely fails alternative positioning technologies based on WiFi signals or ultrasound etc. could be used. In this paper, some of the research carried out in the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems, University of New South Wales, into positioning in environments where standard GPS fails is described.

A New Vision-Based and GPS-Signal-Independent Approach in Jamming Detection and UAV Absolute Positioning Assessment

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) positioning in the outdoor environment is usually done by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Due to the low power of the GPS signal at the earth surface, its performance disrupted in the contaminated environments with the jamming attacks. The UAV positioning and its accuracy using GPS will be degraded in the jamming attacks. A positioning error about tens of...

GPS Jamming Detection in UAV Navigation Using Visual Odometry and HOD Trajectory Descriptor

Auto-navigating of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the outdoor environment is performed by using the Global positioning system (GPS) receiver. The power of the GPS signal on the earth surface is very low. This can affect the performance of GPS receivers in the environments contaminated with the other source of radio frequency interference (RFI). GPS jamming and spoofing are the most serious a...

Autonomous Vehicle Positioning with GPS in Urban Canyon Environments

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has been widely used in land vehicle navigation applications. However, the positioning systems based on GPS alone face great problems in the so called urban canyon environments where the GPS signals are often blocked by high buildings and there are not enough available satellites signals to estimate the positioning information of a x. To solve the problem, a ...

INS/GPS/LiDAR Integrated Navigation System for Urban and Indoor Environments Using Hybrid Scan Matching Algorithm

This paper takes advantage of the complementary characteristics of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) to provide periodic corrections to Inertial Navigation System (INS) alternatively in different environmental conditions. In open sky, where GPS signals are available and LiDAR measurements are sparse, GPS is integrated with INS. Meanwhile, in confined outdoo...

Achieving Centimetre-level Positioning Accuracy in Urban Canyons with Locata Technology

In 2005 The UK Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) commenced funding a project called Visualising Integrated Information on Buried Assets to Reduce Streetworks (VISTA). The project aims to precisely map buried assets (gas pipes, telecom cables, etc) and increase the efficiency of the process in challenging environments such as in urban canyons, where GPS fails to work or is not reliable eno...
